The Next Big Challenge

The next big challenge is in full swing. We landed in Zurich 15 days ago and it took about week before we were sleeping normally. The jet lag was killer but we had to start moving into our new home the next day. Thankfully, this will be the last time we have to move for a long time. This is the first time in nearly 4 years that I will stay in one place long enough to grow some roots and our new home is the perfect place for it. We’re renting a beautiful, traditional, Appenzeller farmhouse built in 1870. We have more rooms than we know what to do with and the barn is huge and full of useful junk. It’s the perfect playground for me.
The first thing we noticed after traveling with only the bare necessities for 3 months is “Wow! We have way too much stuff!”  We have a big house to fill now so we can use most of it but normally, we would have given away many things. As it is, we both got rid of some clothes.
As soon as we got all our stuff moved and partly set up we started tackling paperwork. The more new things there are in your life, the more paperwork you have to do and we have many new things; a new marriage (which means a new name for Kristina), a new country (for me) and a new home so that means a ton of paperwork.
This, of course, is my second time living in Switzerland but this time is special because this time I actually have to integrate. No more simply avoiding situations that require speaking German. This time I have to learn the language and as an American, you all know that our bodies have a natural defense against foreign tongues. It will be a difficult task.
It was much to do while horribly jet-lagged but we are getting it done and we are super happy with our new home.
Also, to help the integration go a bit more smoothly, I shaved. Kristina looked at me funny for two days. =P
